Manus

Manus (pronounced /ˈmɑːˌnuːs/ "MAH-noos"), often referred to simply as the "Tree", is a bronze sculpture created in 1994 by Magdalena Abakanowicz (born 1930) for the Sculpture Collection at Western Washington University. It is located behind the Academic Instructional Center and Academic West and across from Fairhaven College. The sculpture was partially funded by the Washington State Arts Commission's Art in Public Places Program.

Manus is meant to portray a tree, and is part of Abakanowicz's collection "Hand-like Trees", the rest of which is held at Runnymede Sculpture Park in Woodside, California.[1] The word manus is Latin for "hand". The sculpture is 15 feet tall, four feet wide, and four feet deep. It was created using a beeswax mold.[2]
